PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. - The Prince George's County Police Department's Gun Crimes Unit charged a man with 66 offenses in connection with a violent crime spree on Friday afternoon. The suspect is 68-year-old Larry James Simpson of Glen Burnie. Additional charges against him maybe pending.
Simpson committed multiple shootings and carjackings at five locations across the northern portion of Prince George's County. An off-duty Prince George's County Police Officer, who was driving his personal vehicle and was unarmed, observed one of the carjackings and began to track the suspect. The officer called his wife, also a PGPD officer, who transmitted the suspect's location in real time to officers and partner law enforcement agencies across the county, ultimately leading to his arrest.
Based upon the initial investigation, here is a preliminary timeline of the incidents linked to Simpson:
On May 15, 2026, at approximately 2:30 pm, officers received a call for a man pointing a long gun out of his car window in the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park. Witnesses reported the man fired several shots. No one was reported injured.
A short time later, Simpson shot at a car with a 64-year-old man inside on Riverdale Road at the BW Parkway in Riverdale. A round struck the car's window, causing the victim to suffer lacerations to his head. He was not struck by the gunfire. He was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Minutes later, Simpson's car struck another vehicle at 67 Avenue at Patterson Street in Riverdale. This collision caused the suspect's car to overturn. Simpson exited his car and carjacked a Nissan at this location. During the carjacking, Simpson shot at at least four victims. One man was struck by the gunfire and was critically injured. At this time, the victim is expected to survive his injuries.
Several minutes later, Simpson shot at a woman and carjacked her Toyota at Kenilworth Avenue and Good Luck Road in Riverdale. The victim was not injured.
Finally, Simpson attempted to carjack a Honda in the 9000 block of Edmonston Road in Greenbelt. At this location, Simpson shot in the direction of the off-duty PGPD officer who was pursuing the suspect in his personal car. The officer was not struck. With the assistance of three United States Park Police Officers, Simpson was taken into custody. An AR-15 style rifle was recovered at this scene.
Simpson was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries believed to have occurred during the car crash in Riverdale. He has since been released and is in the custody of the Department of Corrections. Simpson is currently charged with 16 counts of attempted first degree murder, 16 counts of attempted second degree murder and related charges.
This remains an active investigation. Detectives would like to speak to witnesses with information relevant to this case as well as hear from any additional victims.

'Knight Rider' car at Illinois museum gets speeding ticket from NYC: 'You can't make this up!'

It's a mystery on the streets of New York City. What traffic law violator with unpaid fines is driving a black Pontiac Trans Am that looks like the car with the talking computer from the 1980s TV series "Knight Rider," and even has the same license plate?
Officials at an Illinois museum are among the people who would like to know. The Volo Museum near Chicago, which has a replica of the show's Trans Am that hasn't moved from its exhibit in years, recently received a $50 traffic ticket from the Big Apple, alleging its car was doing 36 mph in a 25 mph zone in Brooklyn on April 22.
"Well, this is a new one... we got this in the mail today. This is 100% legit," the museum wrote in a Facebook post, sharing a picture of the violation letter. "A traffic camera captured Knight Rider's KITT speeding down the streets of New York City. The camera captured the novelty license plate (not a real plate...and also a California plate). Their official system ties the novelty plate to Volo Museum and we got a bill for $50!! You can't make this up! Our KITT hasn't moved from our museum in years!"
The ticket came complete with traffic camera photos showing a black Trans Am with the California license plate KNIGHT, the same plate as the car on the show and the novelty one on the museum's unregistered car. The license plate is also connected to five other unpaid traffic violations in New York City since late 2024, city records show.
"The fact that we're legally tied to a movie prop is interesting," said Jim Wojdyla, the museum's marketing director. "We're known for having our Hollywood cars from TV and movies, but I have no idea how we got registered from a ticket in New York to the plates in California to the Volo Museum in Illinois. We're still trying to figure it out."
How the city linked the plate to the museum was not immediately clear. The museum said they requested a hearing challenging the ticket. Days after their post went viral, the New York City Department of Transportation said the ticket was issued in error and will be dismissed.
"It's really amusing," Wojdyla said. "We want to find out who this Knight Rider guy is because, birds of a feather. We just want to know is this from a museum, is this just a guy that built this car as a hobby? And it looks pretty damn accurate. We'd like to meet those guys."
"Knight Rider" starring David Hasselhoff as a crime fighter aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986 and featured KITT, the black Trans Am with a snarky talking computer. (KITT stands for Knight Industries Two Thousand). Around 20 KITTS were built for the show but only five of the originals remain, Road & Track magazine has reported.
There are also numerous replicas around, including the museum's. The Facebook group Knight Rider KITT Car Club for people who own replicas has nearly 19,000 members.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a person with the last name Knight renewed their registration for the state plate KNIGHT in March.
New York City is authorized by state law to operate up to 750 cameras with speed detectors. When a camera catches a speeder, it records photos of the vehicle and its license plate. Staff at the city's Department of Transportation review the violations and mail tickets to the vehicle owners if the vehicles were going more than 10 mph over the speed limit, the city's website says.
The Volo Museum is having fun with the ticket trouble on its social media sites. It recently changed its header on its Facebook page to "Home of the Knight Rider KITT that famously got a speeding ticket in New York City without ever leaving its exhibit in Illinois!"
"Does anyone have Hasselhoff's number? He owes us $50!!!!" one of its posts says.
